A Guide to Your Exclusive Support System

Updated: Feb 5

So you landed the ALF/MC manager gig. Congrats! Now, you're suddenly juggling a million things – resident care, staffing, regulations... and feeling like you're supposed to have all the answers.

Deep breaths, friend. You've got this. And guess what? You're not alone!

One of the biggest things I learned early on is that you have a whole army of resources at your fingertips. Think about it:

  • Your residents' clinic doctors and nurses: These folks are a goldmine of info about your residents' health conditions and needs.

  • The pharmacy:  Pharmacists aren't just pill dispensers, they're medication experts! Got a question about drug interactions or side effects? They've got you covered.

  • Hospice nurses and therapists: If you have residents receiving these services, tap into their expertise! They can provide valuable insights and support.

  • Your lab:  Lab techs can help you decipher those confusing test results.

And that's just the start! Don't forget about your facility chef or dietician, social workers, caregivers, and even your suppliers – anyone who interacts with your facility or you can make a call to can be a potential resource.

Now, here's the key: Don't be afraid to ask questions!

I know, I know, it can feel awkward, especially when you're new and want to appear competent. But trust me, most people are happy to share their knowledge.

My go-to phrase? "This might be a dumb question, but..." It instantly disarms people and opens the door for a helpful conversation. I've used this line on everyone from seasoned nurses to the maintenance guy, and it works like a charm.

So, next time you're feeling stuck, remember: you have a support system already. Reach out, ask questions, and tap into that wealth of knowledge. You might be surprised at how much easier your job becomes.

And when you ever need to bounce something off another ALF/MC manager, we're available! Set up a time to chat with us!
