How to Return from Time Off Without Losing Your Sanity

You finally did it. You stepped away from the building, unplugged, and got some much-needed rest. But the moment you walk through the doors, you are greeted by a mountain of paperwork, a looming pile of compliance tasks, and an inbox that looks like a crime scene. Just like that, your hard-earned relaxation evaporates.

It begs the question: How do you actually plan for time off so that your return doesn't completely punish you for leaving?

Over the years, I’ve developed a few strategies to protect my post-vacation sanity. If you want to stop the bounce-back burnout, try implementing one, or all, of these boundaries:

1. Build in a "Buffer Day"

If your budget and staffing allow, extend your designated coverage by just one extra day. On paper, you are still "away" or unavailable for meetings. In reality, you are in your office with the door closed, systematically tackling the hundreds of emails, messages, and state-compliance updates that accumulated while you were gone. This lets you catch your breath before you have to start putting out live fires.

2. Protect Your First 48 Hours

Designate your first day or two back as "minimal operational days." Do not schedule that complex care conference, that challenging family meeting, or a heavy new admission the moment you walk through the door. Even if you feel like a superhero before you leave, consider this your official reminder: you will regret it the day you return. Give yourself space to transition back into the driver's seat.

3. Ruthlessly Triage the Workload

When you return to chaos, you have to play triage. Not everything is an immediate emergency. Identify the top true priorities, handle them, and give yourself permission to let the rest wait a few days. Work through what you can, protect your peace, and use the experience to refine your coverage plan for the next time around.
