If you're anything like us, you find that one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of management is problem-solving.
In Assisted Living and Memory Care, problems aren't obstacles—they're opportunities. They're signals that a process is ready for an upgrade or that a communication method needs a fresh approach. Instead of dreading the moments where things don't work, embrace the chance to innovate!
The Power of Experimentation
Is a current process falling short? Don't just patch it; trial a new process! Think of your department as a living laboratory. If resident care documentation takes too long, brainstorm two, new methods with your team and agree to test each one for a week. Measure the results, ask for feedback, and pivot!
Clear Communication is Key
We know how challenging it is to get critical information out to everyone on your team when you need to, especially with shift changes and varying schedules. If your current method (notes, emails, huddle board) isn't working, it's time to find alternative ways to communicate that genuinely work for your team members right now.
Go Visual: Use short, recorded video updates for specific tasks.
Segment Messages: Use group chats only for urgent items, and rely on shift reports for routine updates.
Test and Tweak: Ask your team which methods they actually use and prioritize those.
Embrace Adaptability
The environment you work in is constantly evolving. Work on being adaptable!
Our resident needs are always changing, the way our teams work is shifting (especially with staffing challenges), and assisted living in general is changing. Building adaptability into your leadership style is no longer optional—it's essential for long-term success.
The excitement of being a manager comes from being able to identify a weakness and successfully build a stronger, more efficient solution. Every problem solved adds to your confidence and your team's success.
Are you wrestling with a stubborn problem and need a fresh perspective? We'd love to partner with you to brainstorm solutions. Reach out to us for a chat!
