Has the mood of your team shifted with the changing weather and the start of the holiday season? This time of year, while often celebrated, can be incredibly difficult for many people. It often leads to lowered team morale, increased frustrations, and sometimes difficult interactions between co-workers.
As a leader, you might be struggling with these same "down in the dumps" feelings, making it hard to put on a happy face for everyone else. Yet, the more you can be encouraging and proactively diffuse the "seasonal blues," the more cohesive and resilient your team will stay.
The Challenge of Leading When You're Struggling
The holiday demands, changing resident needs, managing changing team morale, financial pressures, family stress, and the emotional weight of missing loved ones. These stressors don't disappear just because you're the manager. Trying to hold strong and be a good leader for your team while facing your own work frustrations can feel impossibly lonely.
It’s crucial to remember that you can't pour from an empty cup. To effectively lead your team through the seasonal slump, you must first acknowledge and address your own needs.
Strategies for Supporting Your Team (and Yourself)
Acknowledge the Shift: Don't ignore the change in atmosphere. A simple, "I know the cold weather and the holidays can be tough for many of us, but I appreciate your hard work," can validate their feelings.
Encourage Boundaries: Remind staff to use their PTO and encourage them to prioritize activities that bring them joy outside of work. A burnt-out staff member is a liability to the whole team.
Find the Small Wins: Inject small moments of fun or gratitude. A surprise holiday treat, a focused "thank you", or a silly team photo can instantly lift spirits.
