The Art of Stepping Back: Letting Go of Control in Senior Care

Letting go of control. This is a lesson I still work through every single day.
Like many leaders in Assisted Living and Memory Care, I have a classic Type A personality. I like things done a specific way, and I thrive on the kind of meticulous organization that keeps a community running smoothly. Frankly, that’s understandable. We shoulder the health, wellness, and safety of vulnerable residents while simultaneously steering our teams. In this industry, being organized and maintaining a firm grip on operations isn’t just a preference, it’s necessary.
But there is a fine line between necessary oversight and micromanagement. Sometimes, that drive for order bleeds into wanting more control than a specific situation actually requires.
When I catch myself tightening the reins too much, I try to force myself to take a step back and remember a fundamental truth, there is always more than one way to reach a successful outcome.
When a hot-button issue or a complex problem lands on my desk, I try to remember the power of the "strategic pause." Intentionally taking some time to process before reacting. Giving a problem some breathing room allows the chaos to clear. Suddenly, the initial anxiety fades, the intense need to control every moving part lessens, and a wider variety of creative solutions present themselves.
