Leading in the Wild: A Guide to Thriving in ALF/MC

You were selected for your role because you have strong character, foresight, and an excellent work ethic. But if you're coming from a non management role, let's be real:

Management is a different ball game.

Leading a team in Assisted Living or Memory Care can feel daunting and lonely at times. If you’re struggling to find your footing, remember these four rules for the "wild" side of healthcare:

  • Ditch the "Expert" Mask: You don’t need to know it all. No one does. Be the person who asks the most questions. Your best lessons will come from your failures and those around you.

  • Embrace the Chaos: We aren't the ER, but some days it feels close. Stop trying to control every minute. Go in with a goal, but stay fluid. You’ll be much happier when you stop fighting the spontaneity and start riding the wave.

  • Find Your Fuel: In the middle of the "crazy," there is always a quiet, beautiful moment with a resident. Look for them. Use those moments as the fuel you need to keep going.

  • Build the Bridge: Your team will either be your greatest asset or your biggest obstacle. Spend time building relationships, especially with those you may have challenges with. A stronger bond creates a shorter path to success.

Most importantly: Give yourself some grace. Whether you’re a rookie or a veteran, celebrate every win, no matter how big or small.

Don't go it alone. We’re your partners in the ALF/MC trenches.  We’re committed to your success because our seniors deserve it. Whether you need a fresh perspective or a sounding board, we’re just a message away.
